The first thing to do is to get some more ideas. Walk around some more and look at the other bookcases, pay attention to how they are built. Do you like one better then another? What kind of decorative molding do they have? Which do you like better? Might be worth a trip to a good furniture store to see what some of the real “upscale” pieces have on them. ( Before you leave the big-box store though, stop by the magazine section, and pick up a woodworking magazine. If you get even halfway lucky, you’ll have more than one to choose from and can find one that talks about bookcases.)
After you have read several books, or taken a course, then youre finally ready to pick up some wood and start a project of your own. However, its probably best to leave the deburring equipment alone until you have gained some experience grinding down wood imperfections by hand. This will give you time to understand the proper technique for achieving a smooth surface, and it will help you troubleshoot any problems that arise when youre finally ready to use a machine. In fact, you will find that there are many instances where a large machine is impractical, regardless of how much experience you have using one.
Finger joints are very strong when compared to the normal dovetail joints because they have more area for gluing. If you are looking for examples of finger joints then they are commonly found in bedroom drawers and commercial cigar boxes ( this will give you a good visual aid for a finger joint ). Most wood joints need certain types of screws or certain types of nails. The woodworking finger joint ( or box joint ) does not require any of these and is just as strong as a nailed/screwed joint once constructed.
